The hard work of AIS employees and a strategic partnership with Broadsword Solutions, a leader in performance innovation and process improvement, has resulted in AIS receiving the award of Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) for Development v1.3 at Maturity Level Two (CMMI-DEV v1.3 ML2). CMMI is a process improvement framework for software and engineering systems developed by Carnegie Mellon University’s Software Engineering Institute (SEI) and administered by the CMMI Institute.

“We started this process in February of 2018 and we achieved Level II certification last week, which means that AIS has a defined and repeatable process for software development,” said Adam Hovak, Operations Manager for the Cross Domain and Virtualization Solutions Group at AIS. “Level III, which is where we’re heading next, is a big step and confirms AIS’s commitment to excellence.”

Maturity Level Two indicates that when appraised, AIS was performing at a “managed” level. The achievement of the Level comes as a byproduct of AIS’s partnership with Process Innovation firm Broadsword Solutions (Broadsword), a leader in performance innovation and process improvement.

As pioneers of the agileCMMI performance improvement methodology, Broadsword provided integrated agileCMMI workshops, coaching and consulting solutions to help AIS achieve its capability goals. agileCMMI uses agile methods such as incremental delivery, continuous build and collaboration, applying the same techniques used when writing software to deploy process and help engineers embrace process.

There were many people involved in this effort, which included areas such as design, development, testing, deployment, management, subcontract management, process oversight and quality assurance. In addition to process development, AIS had an internal appraisal team that was made up of employees Heidi Maines, Bobbie O’Brien, Elissa Rivera-Pacheco and Elona Vabishchevich.

“Our team worked hard to help AIS achieve a Level Two rating in CMMI, and I am very proud of them for this huge accomplishment,” said Charles Green, Chief Executive Officer of AIS. “CMMI certification provides us with a process for continuous improvement, which will help support and guide us in all aspects of the work done at AIS. We are already looking forward to reaching Level Three in the near future.”
